Setting Up Your Home Office: Best Internet Providers for Expats in Portugal (2026)

For my clients moving to Portugal from the US, UK, or Northern Europe, high-speed internet isn’t a luxury—it is a non-negotiable requirement. Whether you are a “Digital Nomad” or just need to FaceTime grandchildren back home, the connectivity of a property is now as important as the roof.

One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is assuming that “Fiber” (Fibra) is available everywhere. While Portugal has excellent coverage (ranking consistently high in Europe), there are still “dark spots” in rural Algarve and Alentejo where you might be stuck with slow ADSL speeds.

Before you sign a Promissory Contract (CPCV) on a home, you must verify the connectivity. Here is my guide to the best ISPs (MEO, NOS, Vodafone) specifically for expats setting up their new lives.

1. The “Big Three”: Who Should You Choose?

In Portugal, the market is dominated by three main providers. All of them offer “Triple Play” (TV + Internet + Phone) or “Quadruple Play” (+ Mobile SIMs) packages.

MEO (Altice)

Best For: Rural Property Buyers.
Why: MEO is the former state monopoly (Portugal Telecom). They own the largest infrastructure network. If you are buying a farmhouse in the Algarve hills or Alentejo countryside, MEO is often the only provider that has run a line to that village.
Pros: Widest coverage, reliable fiber reach.
Cons: Customer service can be bureaucratic.

Vodafone

Best For: City Apartments & Urban Villas.
Why: In major hubs like Lisbon, Porto, or central Vilamoura, Vodafone is widely considered the most reliable and stable service.
Pros: Excellent speeds, generally better English-speaking customer support.
Cons: Their rural coverage is not as extensive as MEO’s.

NOS

Best For: Bundled Entertainment.
Why: NOS owns the cinemas in Portugal, so their packages often include free movie tickets.
Pros: Good value bundles.
Cons: In some non-fiber areas, they use satellite/coaxial technology which can be slower than pure fiber during peak hours.

2. The Rural Saviour: Starlink

If you fall in love with a property that is truly “off-grid” or in a dead zone, do not panic. Starlink (Elon Musk’s satellite internet) works exceptionally well in Portugal due to our clear southern skies.

Speed: Fast enough for Zoom calls and 4K streaming.
Cost: Hardware is ~€350 (one-off) and service is ~€40/month (prices vary).
My Advice: I have sold many remote properties where Starlink was the deal-maker. Do not rule out a dream home just because it lacks a cable in the ground.

3. How to Get Connected (The Logistics)

Installation for fiber internet usually takes 2-3 weeks after you sign the contract. This leaves many expats in a “digital blackout” when they first arrive.

4. The “Fiber Trap”: How to Check Before You Buy

Real Estate listings can be misleading. A listing might say “Internet Available,” but that could mean 2Mbps copper wire (ADSL).

Step 1: Ask the agent for the exact postcode (Código Postal).
Step 2: Run a “Coverage Test” (Teste de Cobertura) on the MEO or Vodafone website.
Step 3: Ask the Neighbors. When we visit a property, I often knock on a neighbor’s door to ask, “Do you have Fiber here?” It is the only way to be 100% sure.
