As a keen driver, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of navigating winding roads that challenge your skills and offer breathtaking views.
My love for driving has taken me through some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, but few compare to the majesty of the Swiss Alpine passes.
Switzerland’s Alpine passes are legendary among drivers. The Gotthard, known for its historical significance and stunning views, it offers a thrilling drive through tunnels and along winding roads. The Furka Pass, famous for its appearance in the James Bond film “Goldfinger,it boasts some of the most dramatic and scenic stretches of road, including the iconic Belvedere Hotel just a few meters away from the glacier. And the Grimsel offers a combination of sharp hairpin turns, sweeping curves, and dramatic elevation changes that make for an iconic drive, connecting the Bernese Oberland with the Valais, the pass offers a mix of sweeping curves and tight switchbacks, with panoramic views at every turn. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, with snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and pristine lakes providing a constant backdrop. Each pass has its unique character and every time I am in Switzerland I look forward to driving one again.
Driving through these Alpine passes is an unforgettable experience, but did you know that in Portugal we have many amazing roads that will surprise many driving enthusiasts, and even on certain roads, humble them? Lets have a look!
Portugal might not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking about great driving roads, but it should be. From the rugged coastline to the rolling hills of the interior, Portugal offers a diverse range of routes that cater to all types of drivers. Here are a few of my favourite:
The N222: Douro Valley Delight
Often cited as one of the best driving roads in the world, the N222 winds through the heart of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This route combines tight corners with long straights, all set against the backdrop of terraced vineyards and the meandering Douro River. It’s a perfect blend of challenge and beauty, making it a must-drive for any enthusiast.
Estrada Nacional 2: Portugal’s Route 66
Stretching over 730 kilometers from Chaves in the north to Faro in the south, the Estrada Nacional 2 (EN2) is Portugal’s answer to the iconic Route 66. This road takes you through diverse landscapes, from the lush greenery of the north to the arid plains of the Alentejo and the vibrant Algarve. Along the way, you’ll encounter charming villages, historic towns, and some of the best culinary delights Portugal has to offer. It is a road to be driven in a more sophisticated way, not too fast, but just at the right speed to enjoy the scenery and feel a little nervous when getting to the next left turn..
The Coastal Roads: Breathtaking Atlantic Views
For those who love coastal drives, Portugal’s Atlantic coast offers some of the most scenic routes. The drive from Lisbon to Cascais along the N6, known as the Marginal, provides stunning ocean views and the chance to stop at picturesque seaside towns. Ideal to cruise in a convertible!
The back roads around Monchique
These roads offer you a world rally championship experience; tight tarmac roads, 90º turns, fast switchbacks and amazing views of the Atlantic coast line, followed with some amazing restaurants with amazing food and wine, a perfect day out if you ask me..
The Costa Vicentina; Sagres to Comporta
My love of driving comes from exploring the local roads close to home and the Costa Vicentina road is one of them. Heading North from Sagres is nothing but fun, fast, scary and amazing. Be prepared to be a little nervous, don’t overthink it, just keep your eyes peeled on the next corner, both hands at 10 to 2 and go for it! and before you know it you are at Zambujeira do Mar enjoying a Sea food meal paired with some lovely white wine.
Last but not Least: The Alcoutim Dash
I have nicknamed this myself, its not very good, but when you drive it, you can give it your personal twist.
Along the A22, just before you gone too far and ended in Spain, turn off at Castro Marim and follow the Road that says IC27. Enjoy the gorgeous long stretches of road going up to the Alentejo, take advantage of how quiet the roads can be and enjoy the sweeping road to warm up those tires and brakes.
Be sure to Stop at Alcoutim and jump on the little boat to go across to another country for a spot of lunch or a “Tinto de Verano” (thank me later) and then come back via the road that goes parallel to the river back to the A22.
My journey through Portugal’s roads not only fixes my passion for driving but also opens my eyes to the incredible potentials for real estate investment. So, here are a few reasons why Portugal is the perfect destination for those looking to buy property:
