Owning Classic Cars in Portugal: The 2026 Collector’s Guide

For many of my clients, moving to Portugal involves more than just packing suitcases. It involves relocating a beloved 1970s Porsche 911, a Jaguar E-Type, or a vintage Alfa Romeo.
Portugal is a paradise for classic motoring. We have 300 days of sunshine, smooth tarmac, and a vibrant community of enthusiasts. However, owning a classic here comes with unique challenges that most real estate agents overlook: Humidity and Storage.
As a Buyer’s Representative, I help clients find properties that fit their lifestyle—and for many, that means finding a home with a garage worthy of their collection. Here is your guide to keeping your classic on the road in Portugal.
1. The Real Enemy: Coastal Humidity & Rust
This is the number one issue for collectors. Portugal’s coastline (Cascais, Silver Coast, Algarve) is salty and humid, especially in winter.

The Risk: I have seen pristine chrome bumpers turn to rust in 6 months because the owner parked the car in a “Carport” or a damp underground garage.

The Solution: You need a dry, ventilated garage. When I scout properties for collectors, I specifically check for “rising damp” in the garage walls.

Advice: For high-value collections (Ferrari, Aston Martin), we often recommend installing a dedicated dehumidifier system if the property is within 5km of the sea.
2. The Golden Ticket: ACP Certification
If your car is already in Portugal (or you buy one here), the first thing you must do is join the ACP (Automóvel Club de Portugal).
Getting their “Certificate of Historic Interest” (Veículo de Interesse Histórico) unlocks three massive benefits:

IUC Exemption: You stop paying the annual road tax (Imposto Único de Circulação).

IPO (Inspection) Relief: Instead of a grueling annual inspection, certified classics only need a safety check every 4 years.

City Access: In Lisbon and Porto, older cars are banned from city centers (ZEIR). Certified classics are currently exempt from these bans.
3. Buying a Classic In Portugal
If importing your own car sounds too stressful (customs can be a nightmare), why not buy locally?

The Market: The Portuguese market is unique. Cars here are often more expensive than in Germany or the UK, but they are generally rust-free (if they lived inland) and have low mileage.

Where to Look:

Online: Standvirtual and CustoJusto are the main portals.

Dealers: There are excellent high-end dealers in Lisbon and Porto specializing in Porsche and Mercedes.

Clubs: The best cars never hit the open market; they are sold privately between club members.

4. Mechanics & Maintenance: Who Fixes It?
“Who will tune my carburettors?”
Portugal has a surprisingly deep network of “Old School” mechanics. The Portuguese love to fix things rather than replace them.

Official Brands: Porsche Lisbon has a dedicated “Porsche Classic” center.

Specialists: There are world-renowned restoration shops for Jaguar, Mercedes, and MG in the north of the country (around Porto).

Parts: Shipping parts from Germany or France is seamless (no customs). Sourcing from the UK (post-Brexit) takes longer and incurs duties, so plan ahead.

Whether it’s the Estoril Classics or the Algarve Classic Festival, you will likely be driving on back roads where GPS is vital.
