🔁 A Brief History: From Suppression to Celebration
Under Portugal’s authoritarian regime (1926–1974), May 1st was banned, along with many other civil liberties. Speaking out for workers’ rights was forbidden. Protests were brutally suppressed. Unions were controlled by the state. Social dialogue was nonexistent.
That all changed with the Carnation Revolution of April 25th, 1974. Just days later, May 1st was celebrated freely for the first time in 48 years—millions of people took to the streets across Portugal to celebrate freedom, equality, and human dignity.
Since then, May 1st has become a day of both remembrance and inspiration—a reminder that progress is possible, and that fairness and opportunity are the foundations of a thriving country.
