2026 Vehicle Tax Overhaul: Portugal Simplifies IUC Payments

August 9, 2025

Hi, I’m Ferdi from Immo Lusitania. If you own—or plan to own—a car in Portugal, here’s an essential update to note: starting in 2026, the Imposto Único de Circulação (IUC) will follow a new, streamlined payment schedule. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s Changing with IUC in 2026?

According to reliable sources like DECO Proteste, Benecar, and C1 Broker, the Portuguese government has simplified IUC by introducing set payment dates:

  • All vehicle owners must pay IUC by the end of February—regardless of vehicle registration month.

  • If your annual IUC is over €100, you can pay in two installments:

    • First installment: by end of February

    • Second installment: by end of October

  • For IUC up to €100, a single payment in February suffices

  • Electric vehicles remain exempt from IUC.

Why This Matters for Property Buyers and Residents

These changes were introduced to reduce taxpayer confusion caused by payments tied to the vehicle’s registration month. Now, owners—especially those unfamiliar with Portuguese administrative nuances—will find managing IUC far more predictable and stress-free.

Whether you own a coastal villa or a countryside retreat, we help ensure you’re aware of these practical updates that affect everyday life.

Yes. From 2026, the payment deadline is fixed in February regardless of your vehicle’s registration month.

You can split payment: 50% by February and 50% by October—or pay in full in February if preferred.
